Evaluation of the partial oral prophylaxis exercise is based on the assessment of a candidate's ability to perform a partial oral prophylaxis on the twelve predetermined surfaces of the teeth selected by the candidate. Evaluation of the periodontal assessment is based on the candidate's ability to accurately record the sulcus/pocket depths of four teeth assigned by the approving examiner. The partial oral prophylaxis exercise and the periodontal assessment are judged by specific criteria on a triple blind system and scored on a 100-point scale. A passing grade of 75% is required and failure will require re-examination.

The following table shows the distribution of points awarded by percentage of the total possible score of 100%. Points will not be awarded if there are validated errors in any category and/or incorrect selection of teeth.

Judgement Skills - 10% of total score
  • 3% - Proper 1st Selection of Teeth
    Sufficient calculus on teeth selected
    Teeth selected meet criteria
  • 7% - Radiographs (9 criteria evaluated)
Clinical Skills - 90% of total score
  • 45% - Partial Oral Prophylaxis:
Calculus removal on 12 predetermined surfaces.
  • 27% - Minor Tissue Trauma:
No minor trauma on tissue adjacent to the 12 surfaces chosen for calculus evaluation.
  • 18% - Periodontal Assessment:
    12 probing depths recorded
Automatic Failure - 100% of total score
  • 100% - Major Tissue Trauma
